<< We found Apollo!! He is safe and happy and healthy. Eric went back to the accident scene with his brother and our other dog. Eric chased him around for 20 minutes - we don't think he recognized Eric in the stocking cap and sunglasses - but as soon as he pulled our other dog Athena out of the car, Apollo ran right to him.
We are on the road home now, with our entire family!! Thank you for all you did to help and support us. What a wonderful birthday present! (I turn 30 tomorrow.) God is so good! Keep praying for us, though, as the roads are still a little messy right around Bloomington.
Sincerely,
Stephanie (and Eric) Simpson >>

Below is an email from someone who had a car accident which smashed the rear windshield and allowed one of the dogs to run off. Below that is a reply from someone with numerous suggestions about how to find the dog. Worth keeping even if you are not in the area to help find the lost dog.
The photos were stripped from the original message. When I get them, I will post.

Good morning. My friend Angela Taylor gave me your email addresses. She said that she contacted you this AM on our behalf. I wanted to send you more info.
We are currently in Bloomington, Illinois. We wrecked on I-74 Eastbound just before Le Roy, IL last night. We hit some ice, fishtailed to the right, ran into a ditch and flipped onto the driver's side. Miraculously, we were all OK, but when the back windshield blew out, both of our dogs got out, and Apollo ran as fast as he could - which is incredibly fast! - down the interstate toward the Le Roy exit. We can't find him. The other dog stayed with us. There are probably 8 inches of snow on the ground
now, and it is supposed to continue snowing until midnight tonight.
The locals we have talked to are very kind and doing all they can to help us. One woman even offered to make and hang flyers for us. We will probably be here in Bloomington until tomorrow morning. We are hoping he is found before then and we can take him home.
I have attached 3 pictures. He is wearing a blue collar, not the green one in the pictures. He is about 60 pounds.
Eric's cell # is 704-287-1779, and mine is 704-293-4862. I can be reachedon this email, which goes to my phone. [lovinlindy@carolina.rr.com.]
Anything you can do to help is greatly appreciated, including all of your prayers.Subject: Lost dog - Apollo Simpson

http://www.fidofinder.com/ -- used to be the 'Dog Detective' I think.
I subscribe to the 'missingpets.com' - lots of shelters do; I get 'alerts' nearly every week about a lost pet in my zip code. IF he's Microchipped you need to notify his 'chip' registry.
if you can get ONE contact at each local Animal Control / Shelter / SPCA - what ever they have there, or if there is more than one facility certainly make contact with each of them; try to keep your contacts to one person per location - saves confusion and duplication;
use as many flyers as you can; get work hours and after hours contact#'s, be sure YOUR cell phone is charged at all times, and provide an alternative contact # available 24/7 for you.
GUARANTEE TO PAY ALL VET BILLS; Offer a REWARD but DO NOT SAY HOW MUCH; and that you will accept COLLECT TELEPHONE CALLS; put an E-MAIL address too - but make up a 'New' one just for this event - a Yahoo/Hotmail/AOL account; [You don't want your 'real' e-mail' address out there forever]. [you might want to get a throwaway phone - might be cheaper than text or roaming messages].
1. DO NOT MEET ANYONE THAT SAYS 'THEY HAVE YOUR DOG' WITHOUT POLICE BACKUP
.
2. DO NOT PRE-PAY AIRFARE/GAS/REWARD ETC. TO GET THE DOG TO YOU
3. ALWAYS REQUIRE THAT PHOTOS BE TAKEN AT A VETS OFFICE OR A SHELTER WITH A
'KNOWN' PERSON and SPEAK WITH THAT PERSON - GET NAME/LOCATION/ETC.
put flyers/ads in 'free' newspapers, 'Craigs' list for that area, or other 'local' FREE internet service; SATURATE the AREA contact the Dept of Highways / Dept of Transportation as they are usually responsible for removing animals from freeways;
contact all businesses/restaurants/gas stations, etc. closest to the exit where you were; the Highway Patrol that responded, the EMT's that responded WORK that 'zone';
Any grade/jr. high school in that area, arrange to notify the School Bus drivers so they can notify the kids on their buses - they 'live' in the area and would be somewhat 'familiar' with the area dogs; if a rural area especially if they are being bussed into town; also contact the Postmaster for that zip code; any one that is 'in' that area every day knows what dogs they see on a regular basis.
Schools are probably out there too; but there may be an emergency # you could get for the Bus Fleet; also the Community College if there is one;
He may get up under an overpass or into a culvert for shelter; Highway maintenance workers need to know how to approach him if he's spooky w/ new people;
See if you can put off leaving tomorrow until you can make contact w/ the above people - if you find someone who is willing to help you, leave some of your DIRTY!! clothes - underwear and socks work best; [hold more body odors] with them to use as a 'bait' or 'drag' if they get sightings but can't make contact. Even if you have to urinate on a washcloth from the motel leave that too; -- or the person he is closest too. Leave his food with that person also;
Bloomington is a big city - they may have a Search and Rescue group; see if you can contact the local Kennel Club or Dog Training club; They may have some members who have tracking dogs. http://www.cornbeltkennelclub.
Best,
KinNC
