URGENT! Dahlonega GA Bruiser & Roscoe (3 MO Lab siblings) must be out by May 1 or PTS

 (45 min North of Atlanta)

Bruiser and Roscoe are the bubbahs of the puppy room.  Trouble is they have been at the LUKPKIN COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER
over their allowed time.  They have to be outta there by Wednesday May 1 or they will be PTS.

The siblings are three month old Lab puppies.  They are all lab, have never met a stranger and are rarin' to go.
There are too many black dogs in our area since there is a hex on black so we need to work hard on saving these kids!

The adoption fee is $90 and we may be able to find donors for that.

PLEASE let me hear from you with good news.

Sample email:  Vote No on HB 409

Hi Rep. ____________

Sample Greeting I don’t know if you remember me, but I came out and tried to help on your campaign when you first ran for office.  I had connected with your Mom, --------. Hope your parents and you are well.

Like most folks, I know that you are a compassionate person who loves animals.  Did you know an estimated 300,000 pets are killed in GA shelters every year because people do not spay and neuter their animals?  Georgia Taxpayers already spend at the County Level an estimated statewide aggregate cost of $100 million a year running animal control and euthanizing 1000's of animals, 85% are estimated to be adoptable. The numbers are cited in the proposal to solve this problem, once and for all, by the SEPRR 3 Year Free Spay Neuter Program,
details can be viewed here

Did you know that animal controls across our state want to put an end to this senseless waste thru low cost and free spay neuter?  While Georgia's current practices are already deemed a wasteful practice, this bill comes along and will only make the problem explode!

Ask your county officials how much they budget for animal control every year. Then ask them how many animals that are otherwise adoptable must be killed, and how few are ever rescued. Then ask them how much it would cost to run a county wide spay neuter program, and how much money it would save over the near and long term. I am all about saving tax payers money, and when it can save lives too, especially in a humane manner, then so much the better.

Rescues and county/city animal controls all over the state are combating this senseless killing of our beautiful, healthy homeless pets.  Coincidently, perhaps even fortuitously, tomorrow at 3 PM there will be a press conference addressing this very crisis at which Ag Commissioner Gary Black will speak. You are invited.(View Press Conference Details Here)

At 1 PM there will be a hearing on HB 409 which will set GA back twenty years if passed. It puts great restrictions on local counties and cities to enact their own animal welfare laws from regulating spay and neuter to tethering.  I have heard from the GA Animal Control Association, individual Animal Control Directors, prosecutors, solicitors and rescues working to reduce the killing of 300,000 GA pets.

All are opposed to HB 409. I’m afraid that special interest groups may be trying to affect GA law for their own profit and other endeavors.  There will be a fact sheet coming out on this, but this bill was just introduced and we have had short notice to oppose it.

I appeal to your decency as a humane person to vote NO on this bill should it come up for a vote.  Thank you.

I will be at the Capitol tomorrow and will look for you.

Yours,

FAQ for Stray, Wayward, & Lost Pets

FAQ for Stray, Wayward, & Lost Pets (via @SEPRR) http://j.mp/FAQLostPets

When anyone finds a Wayward Pet, the course of action is straightforward:

Part One: Finding the Pet's Owner:
1- Secure & safely isolate the animal. Provide a quiet warm location with Bedding, Water, something to chew on, and basic food.
2- Call, Text, AND Email the Contacts on the Tags. (Do all 3!)
3- Visit any vet clinic;Scan for a Microchip. (If there is a MicroChip, the Vet will often secure the pet until it's owner arrives. Your work is done!)

Note: In ITP Atlanta, PetSmart is open on Saturdays. Pets Are People Too behind Ansley Mall is open 24/7.
4- Take Some Pictures and then Empower Your Posts! 15 minute Social Media Primer for Pet Rescuers: http://bit.ly/ngw1c5
5- Post the pictures to a Public Album. (Note: FB requires a user login even if the Album is Public. Google+ is truly public, not requiring a login. Hence, post the photos to G+. )

If all these efforts fail:
Eventually, you will have to take your Wayward Pet to Animal Services. When doing so, Stress to Intake Personnel the Pet is a Stray and NOT "Owner Turn In"

Want to know more? Owner Turn-In's can be Euthanized the same day. Strays have a 7 Day hold / owner recovery period. After which time, the animal is "reviewed" (the "Review Date") given a list of circumstances that may or may have anything at all to do with the disposition or health of the pet, the pet can then be euthanized on or after the Review Date. Groups like BHVF raise money so the Pets can be held for adoption after the Review Date has passed, however there is a finite number of pets that can be held for an extended period of time, and the number varies based upon available resources of money, space, fosters, and volunteers. So fostering is a good way to help these pets live and find a home. Usually all the pets need is a bit of extra time to find a home. Policies can and do vary over time.

Part Two:  Rescuing the Pet after surrender to Animal Services:
  • If you plan on making sure the pet survives or is more easily rescued, please consider administering a round of shots before surrendering to Animal Services. Rescues spend most of the funding on vet bills for pets that contracted a condition in animal control. Why? Animals are not usually given shots in any animal control. Fulton County often will thanks to BHVF funding & other grants, but you will need to double check before you turn them in.

Want to know more? Processing in Animal Service is a legal requirement that clears any claim of title the prior owner may have had if the prior owner fails to recover the animal within the Owner Reclaim period. This is enables the animal to be adopted by new owners without the possibility of the prior owner suing for custody of the pet.

  • Identify a Foster with a Rescue Group Willing to Foster the Pet.
  • Apply to become a Foster
- Angels is a very good organization that handles cats & dogs of any age/breed/mix (Fostering with Angels)
- Friends of Fulton County Animal Services now has a solid fostering program Contact Robbie Caban, FCAS Volunteer Coordinator for an application.
  • Promote the Pet to find a Rescue or Foster: Use this article to empower your Social Media reach and save your new Furry Friend!

Want to know more? Rescue groups focus their efforts on homeless pets on death row in Kill Shelters. While Atlanta Humane Society does kill some pets during the intake process, it is not considered a Kill Shelter. The difference is simply the level of killing that takes place.  View 2009 Animal Control Statistics for GA here.  Even with so-called No Kill Shelters, consider the fate of a pet that arrives after the No Kill Shelter is full? That animal will likely be redirected to a "Kill Shelter" unless immediate fostering/rescue resources can be secured.

Suffice it to say, that
given limited resources of rescues, if the pet is not already on death row, a rescue will not be able to bring (or "pull") the pet into their network without you personally stepping up to foster the pet.

Simply opening your home to the pet as a foster parent and shuttling them to/from adoption events is sufficient.

Find a pet rescue near you:
For your own sanity, find a rescue with pet adoption events close to your homeVisit the larger pet stores near your home and ask the store manager for the rescue groups contact info that hold events at that store. Then apply directly to those groups, then pull the dog yourself as a qualified foster into the rescue. Make sure they have frequent adoption events so you can show off your foster!

When Apply to become a Foster, ask the Rescue for all the items the pet will need: A kennel, animal ID#, a supply of food, existing health records, medications, leashes, the direct link on the website where the pet is listed (petfinder.com/petharbor.com etc), schedule of remaining vet appointments, location of the vet, and a list of upcoming adoption events.

HELP STOP ANIMAL FUNDRAISING SCAMS!

Whenever you make a donation to help animals, DONATE to a LOCAL SHELTER instead. That way, you know your donation will actually go to helping animals.

When asked if he envisioned a future without pets, "I don't want to see another dog or cat born." Wayne Pacelle, the vegan President of the Humane Society of the United States, quoted in Bloodied: Nature, Culture and the Hunt by Ted Caressed, 1993, p. 266

"We have no ethical obligation to preserve the different breeds of livestock produced through selective breeding. . . .One generation and out. We have no problem with the extinction of domestic animals. They are creations of human selective breeding." Wayne Pacelle, the vegan President of Humane Society of the US, formerly of Friends of Animals and Fund for Animals, Animal People, May, 1993

While we may not have similar quotes for the ASPCA at present, they are working hand in hand to promote the same agenda as the HSUS.  They are just sneakier about it.

Whitehouse Petition to End the need to euthanize millions of homeless pets

Our First Dog, Bo, needs 25,000 signatures by Nov 22 for the Federal government to devote review andprocessing to this cause. PLEASE HELP!

We put this up on the White House's new petition Site! Please share in THE Twitter! Woof!
Sign Petition to Whitehouse.gov Ending Euthanasia of Homeless Petshttp://wh.gov/TDX via @seprr #petrescue
Please also visit the GA version of this same effort:

Stop Killing #HomelessPets in #GA! Provide 3yrs FREE #SpayNeuter! http://j.mp/3YFSNGA #petrescue via @seprr

We respectfully request legislation be brought forth outlining the means to end killing homeless pets in local animal control facilities. This legislation should to set forth a program of very low cost or even free spay & neuter for a minimum of 3 yrs to reduce the population of homeless pets.
Other states can adopt this proposal, since the status quo is parallel in most of other states. Please stop wasting tax dollars in Georgia, needlessly killing homeless, adaptable pets!
  • 90% Adoptable Homeless Pets
  • 7% owner reclaim
  • 10% adopted
  • 12% Go to "Rescue"groups
  • 61% KILLED
"These people just don't get it," she said. "There will never be enough homes for all the animals that are produced at today's rate. Never. The answer to this problem is strictly spay and neuter."
"The linked Petition for Georgia, contains a complete proposal of a means to pursue this goal, This program will reduce pets in animal control by 40% and reduce by $40,000,000 annually in Georgia in related tax expenditures. Georgia euthaizes 300,000 homeless pets per year costing citizens taxpayers over $100 million annually. Unfortunately Georgia’s numbers are in line with most other states."

FAQ - Signing the Petition on Whitehouse.gov
1- Create an account:The site asks only for your name, zipcode, and email address. In theory, this means that US residents should be signing.

2- The site will send you an email to confirm the account.

3- After you click on the confirmation link, you are now able to sign.

4- If you did not get the email, check your spam buffer or trash folders. This is most likely where the email was redirected. Otherwise, open up a gmail account and use that email address. gmail rocks anyway.. so you will enjoy having it.. for free.

FAQ - Why ONLY GA?
SEPRR, based in Atlanta, GA, has direct access to officials and lobbyists in GA. We are right down the street. SEPRR DOES NOT RAISEFUNDS. Therefore, SEPRR does not have any budget to pursue this change in other states. The most likely path to success is changing a State's Dept of Ag policy towards this issue. Legally, the Federal Government has very little to do with any of this.

FAQ- So why do a White House Petition: If you DO want the Federal Government to look into this crisis, this is a very accessible means of starting that process. So please SIGN IT! Furthermore, attracting National and perhaps International Attention to this will smooth the way for efforts on the State level.

FAQ If you wish to start a similar project for your own state, please contact us @seprr via twitter so we can coordinate creation and promotion of the effort. Thus far, no rescuers in other states, after 4300 signatures, have stepped up, but several have complained, asking why we are only addressing GA.

An outline for GA is here: http://j.mp/nylWna
